Why Choose Organic Color?

I try do the best I can to keep my body and spirit healthy - a daily yoga and meditation practice, good sleep hygiene, organic groceries as much as possible. I am always researching and learning about health and wellness.

And I thought I was covering all my bases.

I carefully look at every ingredient that goes into the food I eat, but for some reason, I had completely overlooked what now seems so obvious:

How clean are the products we put directly on our skin?

Our skin is our largest organ, and is highly absorptive. Lotions, hair products, makeup, and even sunscreen… they don’t just stay on the surface, but leech into our skin and thus our insides. Even from our scalps!

This led me to discover organic hair color and since then, my life has completely changed.

I can make a living doing what I love, while not having to inhale toxic chemicals on a daily basis. My clients hair actually gets healthier the more they use organic color and products! I feel good knowing that I am using the safest products possible while still achieving beautiful results and 100% gray coverage. And while the hair becomes healthier, the color even stays vibrant for longer.

A LITTLE SCIENCE LESSON

To understand the importance of using organic hair dye, we need to have a general understanding of the skin and how it absorbs. I had overlooked what I was putting on the outside of my body because I didn’t think it was going into my body. However, once I learned more about our body’s largest organ, the skin, I discovered that was not the case.

Our skin not only holds our body together, it is also a barrier that protects us from water, damaging sunlight, and harmful chemicals. The skin protects to a certain extent, but it also absorbs through tiny openings on the skin’s surface called pores. We may sometimes see the opening of the pores on the outer layer of our skin (epidermis) but what we don’t see is that the pores connect down into the deeper layers of our skin, the dermis and subcutis.

What we put on our skin doesn’t just sit on the surface - it goes through the openings of the pores on the epidermis, travels down into the dermis and subcutis layers where it goes through the blood vessels and gets absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Unlike the inside of our bodies, which has our liver to filter out any toxins or harmful substances we ingest, our skin doesn’t have any kind of filter. It’s estimated that roughly 60% of what we put onto our skin goes directly into our bloodstream. This includes any chemicals and toxins that are included in most lotions, makeup, and hair products on the market. Most hair color contains harmful chemicals, such as ammonia, formaldehyde, and PPD, just to name a few.

Even if you don’t put it directly onto your skin, it’s harmful just to be around these products since you are inhaling the fumes. These chemicals have been known to cause skin, eye, and lung irritation. In some cases, and with prolonged exposure, they can cause allergies, immunotoxicity, and even cancer. These chemicals can also cause hair loss, breakage, damage, and color fading. This is why I choose to only work with organic hair color, using the best and most effective organic hair color and product line out there, OWAY.

ORGANIC WAY

OWAY, which stands for Organic Way, is an organic color and product line made in Italy. Each product is formulated using the most advanced green chemistry. Every ingredient in their products is either grown sustainably on their farm in Bologna or gathered from fair trade and sustainable sources. All ingredients are free of pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and synthetic fertilizers. They even go so far as to use donkeys rather than tractors to avoid polluting the air around the plants.

The plants and herbs are harvested in their balsamic (dark moon phase) period and they are then distilled locally in steam current where they are transformed into essential oils, hydrolates, and extracts using traditional, natural methods without the use of synthetic solvents. They combine organic and biodynamic raw materials with carefully selected natural ingredients, like pure oils, waxes, butters, and emollient plants, and the purest and most sustainable active and functional ingredients. This results in the most organic and pure hair products on the market, that actually work.

Your gray will be 100% covered and your hair will become healthier, shinier, and more vibrant every time you use OWAY color and products. Another reason I love OWAY is because they care about animals, people, and the environment. Every OWAY product is packaged in amber glass and aluminum, which are both 100% recyclable. OWAY products are never tested on animals and are certified by PETA as cruelty free. OWAY laboratories run on renewable, clean energy, and all ingredients are fair-trade and sustainably harvested.

It’s important to keep in mind that no hair dye is 100% chemical free. In order to dye the hair, a chemical reaction needs to take place. If we are going to dye our hair every 6-8 weeks for years, it only makes sense to choose a hair color that contains the least amount of chemicals and the most amount of organic botanicals, plant butters, and essential oils to keep your hair, scalp, and body happy and healthy. OWAY color contains only 2% chemicals and the rest is organic plant butters and essential oils.

HAIR PRIESTESS HAIR CARE

Each Hair Priestess organic hair color service comes with a pH balancing hair mask, to restore your hair back to its natural pH after coloring.

The two questions we are most frequently asked are 1) does organic color cover gray and 2) how long does it last? It covers gray 100% and, like all hair color, can be permanent or semi-semi-permanent depending on the results you are looking for.

Additionally, a lot of people who tend to have allergic reactions to traditional hair color come to us. Organic color is great for people who have had severe reactions to traditional hair products.
